May 15, 2009 Oak Design & Construction Selected for the 2009 Greater Chicago Home Tour weekend of May 16-17 Oak Design & Construction was selected for the 2009 Greater Chicago Home Tour May 16-17 to showcase its recent renovation and addition at an Oak Park home. The tour features new construction and recently remodeled homes in various communities throughout Northern Illinois. “This is the second year in a row that we have been on the tour and we are honored to be one of the firms selected to showcase its work,” says Dave Brady, Certified Remodeler and owner of Oak Design & Construction. Oak Design is showcasing one of its most recent projects, a second floor renovation and addition to a 1920’s two-story stucco home in north Oak Park. Oak Design worked with the homeowners to incorporate sustainable design techniques and materials for the renovation and addition. Completed just two months ago, Oak Design, along with Nevin Hedlund Architects, created an addition to a home to provide more space for an active family of four with growing children. An addition was created on the side of the home instead of a typical rear addition to protect the home’s backyard, incorporate natural sunlight into the space and create better circulation for the reconfiguration of the second floor. A three-season porch on the first floor adjacent to the formal dining room creates a place for relaxation and entertaining. “We carefully thought through the orientation of the addition to make sure we used space efficiently,” says Brady. “This is a moderately-sized addition and renovation with a huge user benefit.” For the second floor, Oak Design reconfigured the home’s existing space by adding a second bathroom, transforming an existing hall bathroom into a new master bathroom and re-imagining a hall closet and attic stairway to add more square footage to the master bedroom. Featuring timeless white subway tile complemented by colorful glass tile borders and a west-facing window for sunlight, the classic style of the children’s bathroom will accommodate them through adolescence. Taking a more formal approach with the master bathroom, Oak Design created a spa-like space with a separate soaking tub, large shower and semi-private toilet niche. Flooring mimics traditional Carrara marble, but is made of an easily maintained porcelain. A large south-facing window showcases a mature pine tree to bring nature into the spa-like space. Throughout the design and construction process, the homeowners worked with Oak Design to incorporate sustainable design techniques and materials for the renovation and addition. “To ensure the energy efficiency of the home, we used Pella Energy Star rated windows and doors, spray foam insulation, low-flush toilets, low VOC wood floor finish and rapidly renewable grown wood for interior trim and doors,” says Brady. Oak Design applies this environmental sensibility to all of their projects. Tour hours are 11am to 4pm on Saturday, May 16 and 11am to 4pm on Sunday, May 17. Admission is free.
