October 31, 2008 Oak Design Wins Two Awards from the Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago Two Oak projects received Gold and Bronze Key Awards at the HBAGC's Home Builders' Ball on Friday, October 3, 2008. The Key Awards recognize excellence in housing design, architecture, interior merchandising, landscaping, landscape architecture and remodeling. The Gold Key Award winner in the Room Additions category went to Oak's 800 square foot addition to a River Forest Home. With the help of Nevin Hedlund Architects, Oak designed and constructed the addition to provide more kitchen space and a casual dining area. “The family of four wanted a larger, organized and fully-equipped kitchen space for both cooking and entertaining,” says Brady. The kitchen design incorporates bold red accents and dark blues complimented by a neutral canvas of painted cabinetry and maple hardwood floors. The cabinets, a cherry island and three freestanding units were custom-built in Oak’s cabinet shop. A raised dishwasher, dishwasher drawer and maple butcher’s block add aesthetic appeal and practical design to the space. HBAGC awarded the Bronze Key Award in the Residential Specialty/Special Projects category to a basement remodel project in River Forest. Once a dark basement used for laundry and storage, Oak remodeled the space, creating a comfortable family room, kitchenette, upscale bathroom and orderly laundry room. To make the space feel less like a basement, Oak lowered the floor and deepened the window wells to make use of natural light. To view photos of the Gold Key Award winner, click here.
