As Jeff and Diane Frisch learned in their kitchen project, a home renovation opens the door to seeing better. New spaces can incorporate up to three distinct types of lighting to boost both mood and functionality:

  • Ambient
  • Task
  • Architectural (or "accent") lighting

Ambient lighting is general room illumination, whereas task fixtures direct light to desktops or kitchen counters where work is done regularly. Architectural or accent fixtures spotlight a home's special features: paintings, crown moldings - even an arrangement of flowers.

When all three types of lighting work together, they are hardly noticeable. But when used individually, the difference is vivid. Ambient lighting makes renovated spaces livable and enjoyable; task and architectural fixtures add luster and drama to the design.

The new kitchen for Jeff and Diane, for example, chose dimmable pendant lamps and recessed ceiling fixtures for a utilitarian and period-appropriate kitchen. Hidden under their custom cabinetry units, however, is adjustable task lighting - giving the cook the specific level of work illumination needed.
