Linden:
A House Expanded

How Oak Design blended an intricate addition
with an 80-year-old home's existing charm

Long before Mike and Linda Caprile stepped inside, they knew they loved the house on Linden Avenue. The Capriles wrote the owners asking if they would consider selling, and they were invited to tour the three-story house. As soon as Mike and Linda walked through the front door, they knew they had found the perfect home for their growing family.

The house was in excellent condition, and the Capriles didn’t plan on remodeling; and yet a few innocuous changes triggered a two-year renovation that created a master suite, enlarged family room, remodeled bathroom, kitchen and patio.

Linda’s interior decorator highly recommended Oak Design & Construction to assist in project planning and to perform the complex construction and mechanical engineering. In order to build the second-floor master suite, Oak Design had to extend the foundation by five feet, create access to the crawl space and add new systems to heat and cool the entire house.

Oak created a new roofline for the addition. Carefully matching the existing Ludowici French roof tiles and copper sheet metal work, the transition from the old roof to the new is invisible. A copper-clad barrel-vault dormer constructed with a round window allows natural light in the master bedroom. Oak also expanded the chimney and created two dramatic fireplaces. The first, in the family room, features a carved limestone facade and the second, out of limestone block, extends the full height of the bedroom.

Inside, Oak used the home’s original profiles to create larger, dramatic nine-step crown molding as well as moldings for the windows, doors and baseboards. Oak’s in- house woodshop even crafted roundtop, black walnut doors. The intricate 3/4" mosaic tiles in the master bathroom’s large shower took almost three weeks to install.

Linda claims she can’t take credit for the gorgeous home. "Even though we had input, it was Oak and our designer. We chose the best to work on our house."
